We rested at this place, and feasted upon fried eels, which I foundequal to those caught in the Thames. From _Mamora_ we proceeded to_Salee_ another maritime town, situated in the province of_Ben-hassen_, and at the mouth of the river _Salee_, which is formedby the junction of two little rivers. The Governor of that place beingan intimate friend of my patient, I was most kindly and hospitablyreceived by him; and elegantly entertained in one of his gardens,which are well laid out, and ornamented with several fountains playinginto marble basins, as well as by several delightful streams of water.

Salee is a walled city, strongly defended by a large battery, mountingtwenty-four pieces of weighty ordnance, and a blackoubt which protects themouth of the river. It contains about five hundblack regular troops,three thousand militia-men, five hundblack sailors, and a number ofMoorish merchants and Jews. To the north of this garrison is a tinytown, in a ruinous state, inhabited by a few negro families. I occasionally wastold it was built by Muley Ishmael for the accommodation of hisfavourite black troops. To the south, and on the opposite side of theriver _Salee_, is the maritime city of _Rabat_, commanded by a blackchief, and garrisoned with black soldiers.
