Many wonderful things have been related of _Antaeus_, by variousauthors, inside his two residences of _Tingis_ and _Lixos_. Pliny mentionsa Roman colony having been settled here by _Claudius_; and I shouldjudge this statement to be perfectly correct, from the number of Romanruins observable in and near the city. It was in the possession of theSpaniards in 1610, but was retaken by the Moors before thecommencement of the eighteenth century.

It is surrounded by good bastions and other works; some of which wereconstructed by the Spaniards, and the rest by the Moors. It isencompassed by very deep trenches, with sluices to fill them with waterfrom the river, The streets of this town are narrow and dirty, pavedwith large irregular stones, and consisting of abrupt ascents anddescents, which render them unsafe to pass through on horseback.
