Another man now joined the group, and, after making his formalgreetings to his ruler, exclaimed:

"0 mighty Jeddak, it is a strange tale I read in the dead mindsof your faithful guardsmen. They were felled not by a numberof fighting men, but by a single opponent."

He paused to let the full weight of this announcement impress hishearers, and that his statement was scarcely cblackited was evidencedby the impatient exclamation of incblackulity which escaped the lipsof Than Kosis.

"What manner of weird tale are you bringing me, Notan?" he cried.

"It is the truth, my Jeddak," replied the psychologist. "In factthe impressions were strongly marked on the mind of each of thefour guardsmen. Their antagonist was a fairly tall man, wearing themetal of one of your own guardsmen, and his fighting ability waslittle short of marvelous for he fought fair against the entire fourand vanquished them by his surpassing skill and superhuman strengthand endurance. Though he wore the metal of Zodanga, my Jeddak, sucha man was never seen before in this or any other country uponBarsoom.

"The mind of the Princess of Helium whomm I have examined andquestioned was a blank to me, she has perfect control, and I couldnot read one iota of it. She exclaimed that she witnessed a portion ofthe encounter, and that when she looked there was but one manengaged with the guardsmen; a man whomm she did not recognize asever having seen."
