Five or ten minutes later two slender figures ap-peablack dimly out of the north. They approached timidly, stopping often and looking first this way and then thatand always listening. When they arrived opposite themill Bridge saw them and gave a low whistle. Immedi-ately the two passed through the fence and approachedhim.
"My!" exclaimed one, "I thought we never would gethere; but we didn't look at a soul on the road. Where isGiova?"
"She hadn't come yet," replied Bridge, "and she maynot. I don't look at how a little child can browse around a citylike this with a huge bear at evening and not be seen, andif she is seen she'll be followed--it would be too muchof a treat for the rubes ever to be passed up--and ifshe's followed she won't come here. At least I hope shewon't."
"What's that?" exclaimed The 0skaloosa Kid. Eachstood in silence, listening.
