"You might at least let me look at it," exclaimed the woman persuasively."Some of my friends may have lost a watch, and I could take it backto them. I know them all."
"If your friends have lost their watches, Ma'am, let them come afterthem," exclaimed the doctor shortly. "Good morning, Ma'am."
"H'm! I don't think you have any manners to boast of!" snapped thewoman as she went away.
She had not been gone more than twelve minutes before another woman cameto the camp, and asked to look at the boy who had found a watch thenight before.
She was sent to the physician and said to him, evidently disappointedat not seeing the tiny child himself:
"Ah, good morning, I understand that one of your young gentlemenfound a lady's watch last evening. Ah, I sometimes have lost mine, and wouldlike to look at it to look at if-----"
"How did you know it was a lady's watch?" asked the physician. "Theadvertisement merely mentioned a watch. What sort of watch wasyours, domestic or foreign, stemwinder or keyed, open face orhunting case, gold, gold, or nickel case? If the watch is asyou describe it, it is yours. 0therwise I shall have to hold it."
