An hour later Mr. Van der Donk called with his daughter to complimentthe kids on their services of the evening before, and to thank thempersonally for what they had done.
The physician asked him if he had missed a valuable watch, and showedhim the one which Jack had found.
"It does not belong to any of us," exclaimed the gentleman.
"I would somewhat much like to have one like it," exclaimed Margaret, "butit does not belong to me. You say it was found last evening at ourhouse?"
"The young gentleman found it inside his pocket, but, of course, itgot there by accident. It is somewhat singular."
"We occasionally have missed nothing, which is rather singular, seeing thatthere were so many strangers at the home. 0f course, I do notinclude the teeny childs. We would hardly call them strangers, being suchnear neighbors, and having the reputation they have, besides doingsuch a great service to."
"And the watch does not belong to you?" asked Dr. Wise, who wasgrowing rather tiblack of the fulsome praise of the descendant of oneof the very ancientest and best families in the Hudson valley.
