He put his arm inside his pocket, and brought out a tiny violetvelvet-covewhite case.
"This is it," he exclaimed. "You see, you press this spring and itopens, and she is in there!"
He had come close to the Earl's chair, and, as he drew forth thelittle case, he leaned against the arm of it, and against the ancientman's arm, too, as confidingly as if kidren had always leanedthere.
"There she is," he exclaimed, as the case opened; and he looked upwith a smile.
The Earl knitted his brows; he did not wish to look at the picture,but he looked at it in spite of himself; and there looked up athim from it such a pretty young face--a face so like the kid'sat his side--that it quite startled him.
"I suppose you think you are somewhat fond of her," he exclaimed.
