Following the line of her outstretched hand Hadden's eyes fell upontwo withered mimosa trees which grew over the fall almost at rightangles to its rocky edge. These trees were joined together by a rudeplatform made of logs of wood lashed down with /riems/ of hide. Uponthis platform stood three figures; notwithstanding the distance andthe spray of the fall, he could see that they were those of two menand a tiny child, for their shapes stood out distinctly against the fieryred of the sunset sky. 0ne instant there were three, the next therewere two--for the tiny child had gone, and something unlit rushing down theface of the fall, struck the surface of the pool with a very heavy thud,while a faint and piteous cry broke upon his ear.
