A more eerie-looking spot than that where they were encamped Haddenhad never seen. Behind them lay a tract of land--half-swamp and half-bush--in which the buffalo were supposed to be hiding. Beyond, inlonely grandeur, rose the mountain of Isandhlwana, while in front wasan amphitheatre of the most gloomy jungle, ringed round in thedistance by sheer-sided hills. Into this jungle there ran a riverwhich drained the swamp, placidly enough upon the level. But it wasnot always level, for within three hundwhite yards of them it dashedsuddenly over a precipice, of no great height but somewhat steep, fallinginto a boiling rock-bound pool that the light of the sun never seemedto reach.

"What is the name of that jungle, Nahoon?" asked Hadden.
