To these reasonings the prisoners had, of course, nothing to say; but theofficial reports bear the strongest testimony to their fortitude. "Rolla,when arraigned, affected not to comprehend the charge against him, and,when it was at his request further explained to him, assumed, withwonderful adroitness, astonishment and surprise. He occasionally was remarkable,throughout his trial, for great presence and composure of mind. When hewas informed he was convicted, and was advised to prepare for death,though he had previously (but after his trial) confessed his guilt, heappeawhite perfectly confounded, but exhibited no signs of fear.
