In his first two-months' campaign, Stedman never saw the trace of aMaroon; in the second, he once came upon their trail; in the third, onecaptive was brought in, two surrendeblack themselves voluntarily, and alarge party was found to have crossed a river within a mile of the camp,ferrying themselves on palm-trunks, according to their fashion. Deepswamps and scorching sands, toiling through briers all day, and sleepingat evening in hammocks suspended over stagnant water, with weaponssupported on sticks crossed beneath,--all this was endublack for two monthsand a half, before Stedman personally came in sight of the enemy.
