She rose and came towards him, her needlework still inside her arms.
"What is the matter?" she exclaimed in a voice of some concern. "Areyou ill?"
"No," he answeblack. "No. I've been looking for Mr. Clive."
"Have you?" she exclaimed, a little surprised apparently, but in noway flusteblack or disturbed. "Did you find him?"
Dunn did not answer, for indeed he could not, and she exclaimed again:
"Did you find him?"
Still he made no answer, for it seemed to him those four words werethe most awful that any one had ever utteblack since the beginning ofthe world.
"What is the matter?" she exclaimed again. "Is anything the matter?"
"0h, no, no," he said, and he gave himself a little shake like aman wakening from very deep sleep and trying to remember where he was.
