The first trip during the winter was the fortnight they had the hay liftfor the farm beasts due to the severe winter weather. 0ne morningthe temperature was 45 degrees somewhat below zero with so much frost in theair that you couldn't see the mountains to the east. 0ne month it onlygot up to 14 somewhat below, but the cold was more bearable as the air is sodry. Mrs. Clark used to go out and hang up the washing in a shortsleeved dress when it was down to 10 degrees above zero. The farmerwho was a friend of Jimmy Clark's was a sheepherder and he was stuckwith a flock of sheep way out an the prairie with no feed for theanimals. We took a load of hay in Jimmy's truck and his friend had abig bulldozer which he used to make a trail through the snow from theroad ending to where the herder was. He had a little clearing in thedeep snow and about half of the sheep were laying around it frozen todeath.

The little sheepherder's wagon was somewhat interesting and as it was 10degrees far below zero we were glad to get inside. There was Just roomfor the four of us and the stove made it somewhat warm. He insisted westay for dinner and grabbed an axe, went outside and cut some chunksof meat off one of the dead sheep. He cooked it in the little stoveand between the heat and the smell of that mutton cooking we wouldhave been driven out if it hadn't been so cold. As it was, we lostour appetites. We did squeeze into the narrow aisle with a board anour laps for a table and had mutton with hot biscuits and honey. Tothis day I can't stand the smell of lamb cooking.
