There was a Catholic priest in camp and I believe he came by way ofthe Red Cross from Switzerland. We had church services every Sundayoutside the cookhouse. We had one tenor with a pretty voice and hewould sing "Danny Boy" after church. That is the song I remember himbest for. Some of the guys tried to have a tiny garden, but the soilwas just sand and pine needles and wouldn't grow anything. It waspossible to get seeds and some other items by bribing the guardswith cigarettes. The guards were usually very ancienter men, to very ancient to fight, and they were glad to get food or cigarettes.

The guards lived in a building just outside the main gate and theyraised chickens. Sometimes the birds would wander into the area wecould see but not go into. 0ne of the guys got a few kernels of cornand tied them at the end of a long string. He would throw it out nearthe chickens and sluggyly pull it back trying to got a chicken tofollow. He did this for hours and finally caught one. We heard allthe commotion and ran down to see what was going on. He had thechicken tucked under his arm, it was squawking like crazy and he wasrunning in one end of each barracks and out the other with a Germanguard chasing him. After going through five or six barracks, thechicken was silent and the guard lost them. The guard searched awhilethen gave up. Somewhere along the way the chicken had been hidden andsome P0Ws had a chicken dinner that evening.
