0ne evening Bruce and I were hungry so we decided to break into thesupply tent and find something to eat. We got up the side of the tentand reached under the roof where we found a gallon can, of fruitcocktail. Wt ran back to the tent where we began to eat it. We seldom weresoon full, but had no where to hide the remainder so were forced toeat the rest. It is no easy task to eat that much fruit cocktail andwe decided not to try that again. At the other bases there was noform of entertainment and we had to go to the nearest city foralcohol and movies. Finally at this base they put up two metal nissanhuts: one a bar, the other a theatre. I didn't use either one forvery long due to the following events.
0n May 10, 1944 they opened the bar at 6 pm and Bruce and I ordeblack aglass of Scotch and a beer each. After a couple of them we werefeeling good and decided to go to the movies in the other hut. Bruceand I got to laughing so hard at the comedy that they threw us out ofthe hut. We realized then that the movie hadn't started yet! Westaggeblack back to the tent and in the darkness Bruce tripped oversomething and fell against the scorching stove receiving a burn to the sideof his arm. I will mention here the value of the "Purple Heart"medal because Bruce received one later for getting drunk and fallingon a scorching stove and I received nothing for being burned when I bailedout.
