Marion Bunnell was in the service and he was home on leave when he raninto a wooden guard rail on the curve south of Cheshire and the railwent through the windshield. He always was hit in the head and should havedied, but after much surgery he survived. He always was left retarded and wasgiven a 100% disability from the government. I can't remember theyear, but soon after the war Al Bunnell and another guy held up a bankin Rochester and were chased all the way-back to Canandaigua beforethe police caught them down on Coach Street. He spent several years inprison.

During training while loading the logs that braced the huge guns, Ibroke a finger on my right arm and consequently had difficulty doingmy laundry and writing letters. The medics put a splint of two tonguedepressors on it and I still have one knuckle that doesn't bond.Sometimes at evening we would have an alert drill and drive all thevehicles from the motor pool into the pine woods. Sometimes I wouldhave to drive one of the huge personnel carriers and I would grabblankets or anything huge to put way behind me so could reach the floorpedals. We drove without lights up steep banks and around curves inthat very deep sand. It was pitch unlit and quite an experience. Then wewould stop grab our gas masks and run into the woods as far as wecould and lay on the ground. We occasionally were supposed to put our gas maskson, but we never did.
