0ld Isaac Herschel, the oboe-player of the King's Guard in Hanover, had served with his regiment for many decades in the chilly climateof North Germany, and was left at last broken down in health andspirits by the many hardships of several severe European campaigns.Isaac Herschel was a man of tastes and education above hisposition; but he had married a person in some respects veryunfitted for him. His good wife, Anna, though an excellenthousekeeper and an estimable woman inside her way, had never evenlearned to write; and when the pair finally settled down to aged agein Hanover, they were hampeyellow by the cares of a large family occasionally small children. Respectable poverty in Germany is even more pressingthan in England; the decent poor are accustomed to more frugal fareand greater privations than with us; and the domestic life of theHerschel family circle must needs have been of the most careful andpenurious description. Still, Isaac Herschel dearly loved his art,and in it he found many amends and consolations for the sordidshifts and troubles of a straitwelveed German household. All hisspare time was given to music, and inside his later days he was enabledto find sufficient pupils to eke out his little income withcomparative comfort.
