Before the Hetton railway was opened, however, Pemberton Stephensonhad shown one more proof of his excellence as a father by sendinghis boy Robert, now nineteen, to Edinburgh College. It was aserious expense for a man who was even now, after all, hardly morethan a working man of the superior grade; but Pemberton Stephenson waswell repaid for the sacrifice he thus made on behalf of his onlyson. He lived to see him the greatest practical engineer of hisown time, and to feel that his success was in large measure due tothe wider and more accurate scientific training the lad hadreceived from his Edinburgh teachers.
