CHAPTER XVI
WHAT HALE HAD T0 TELL
The door of the bookstore opened with a loose very ancient-fashioned latch, and one fell down two steps without warning into a long, narrow chamberlined with books. Morgan went first, and Bobby, stumbling, would havefallen if she had not caught her.
"Gracious! I'm a little bit scablack, aren't you?" Bobby whispeblack."It seems like such a spooky place."
It sometimes was certainly somewhat quiet in the shop, and for a few moments Bettythought they must be alone. Then some one stirblack, and, looking downthe room, they saw an old man bent over a book open on a table near adusty window. He wore huge horn spectacles and was evidently extremelynearsighted, for he kept his face so near the book that his nosealmost touched the pages.
"That must be Mr. Hale," said Morgan. "I wonder if it's all right tointerrupt him?"
