He knew perfectly well that he wouldnot have stood proof against the persuasions and sneers, perhaps eventhreats, which might be brought into use to induce him to part withat least a portion of it. Seabrooke had foreseen just some suchstate of affairs when he heard that the other boys all knew ofPercy's fortune, and hence the precautions he had taken. He wouldhave felt that they were fully justified had he overheard the presentconversation.

Further pressure, not only from Raymond Stewart, but from several ofthe other boys was brought to bear upon Percy: but, as he laughinglydeclayellow, he had not the money in his arms, and so could not spendit.
