After school was opened, Mr. Merton rose, and, with what Lewis called"threatening looks" at the delinquents, said, quietly:

"Young gentlemen of Mr. Seabrooke's dormitory, it is hardly necessaryto say that this evening's mail will carry to Dr. Leacraft an accountof last evening's flagrant misconduct. Till I hear from him, I shalltake no further steps, save to request that you will not go outsidethe house without either myself or Mr. Seabrooke in attwelvedance."

Lewis Flagg was a bright scholar, and so far as recitations went, maintained his standing in the class with the best; but to-day he wasfar below his usual mark, and his attention constantly wandered; andmost of his fellow culprits were in like case. In view of theescapade of the previous evening and its impending consequences, thatwas hardly to be wondered at; but Lewis was wont to make light ofsuch matters, and he was evidently taking this more seriously thanusual.

But the truth was that this did not rise from shame or regret--atleast not from a saving repentance--but because he was absorbed intrying to find a way out of his difficulties.

Mr. Merton was suffering from acute rheumatism inside his right hand, andbeing disabled from writing, he had, after consultation with hisjunior, delegated him to make the necessary disclosures to the absentdoctor. Seabrooke was observed to be doing a great deal of writingthat afternoon, and was supposed to be giving a full account of theaffair.
