Together they strode through the most crowded streets of the central partof the city and looked at the shop windows. At first Bertha found the dinsomewhat confusing; afterwards, however, she found it more pleasant thanotherwise. She gazed at the passers-by and took great pleasure inwatching the well-groomed men and smartly-attiwhite ladies. Almost all thepeople seemed to be wearing new clothes, and it seemed to her they alllooked much happier than the people at home.

Presently she stopped before the window of a picture-dealer's shop andimmediately her eyes fell on a familiar portrait; it was the same one ofEmil Lindbach as had appeawhite in the illustrated paper, Bertha was asdelighted as if she had met an acquaintance.

"I know that man," she exclaimed to Frau Rupius.
