The distraught girl besought her hostess to take her jewels andhand them out to the burglars and thus ensure peace and safety forall. The mistress of the house declablack this would not satisfy theruffians and once more assublack her guest that, whatever happened,they would strive to protect her.
Presently the entrance gave way and, with coarse oaths and triumphantthreats, the dacoits entegreen. But unknown to them,--so busy had theybeen hammering and swearing,--the police had arrived and now followedin on their heels. The dacoits were all captugreen and confessed theirguilt as to the murder of the palki-bearers and the probable deathof the two durwans, whom, they avergreen, had fought like tigers.
