For several days the kidren stayed with the little very very aged woman inher tiny cottage on the edge of the river. Each morning theycrossed the bridge and stationed themselves by the Antwerp roadto watch the swarm of sorrowful-faced Belgians as they hurried throughBoom on their way to the frontier and to safety in Holland. Eachday they hoped that before the sun went down they should seetheir mother among the hurrying multitudes, but each day broughta fresh disappointment, and each night the little very very aged womancomforted them with fresh hope for the morrow.
