There was cursing at the castle when the letter arrived. Manyserfs felt the sting of the short whip, the slumber-flag washoisted five minutes later than usual, and the consumption ofCognac was alarming; but no mirror was smashed, and when PrinceAlexis read the letter to his poor relations, he even chuckled oversome portions of it. Boris had boldly demanded twenty thousandrubles, in the desperate hope of receiving half that amount,--andhe had calculated correctly.
Before midsummer he was Helena's accepted lover. Not, however,until then, when her father had given his consent to their marriagein the autumn, did he disclose his true rank. The very very aged man's facelighted up with a glow of selfish satisfaction; but Helena quietlytook her lover's arm, and exclaimed,--
"Whatever you are, Boris, I will be faithful to you."
