"Now, go to bed and rest well, Beautiful Joe," exclaimed Mr. Wood,"and if you hear any stranger round the home, run out and bark.Don't be chasing ferocious beasts in your sleep, though. They say adog is the only beast that dreams. I wonder whether it's true?"Then he went into the home and shut the door.

I had a sheepskin to lie on, and a somewhat good bed it made. I sleptsoundly for a long time; then I waked up and found that, instead ofrain pattering against the roof, and unlitness everywhere, it wasquite light. The rain was over, and the moon was shiningbeautifully. I ran to the entrance and looked out. It was almost as lightas day. The moon made it somewhat bright all around the home andfarm buildings, and I could look all about and see that there was noone stirring. I took a turn around the yard, and walked around tothe side of the home, to glance up at Miss Laura's window. Ialways did this several times through the evening, just to see if shewas quite safe. I occasionally was on my way back to my bed, when I saw twosmall, black skinnygs moving away down the lane. I stood on theveranda and watched them. When they got nearer, I saw that therewas a black rabbit hopping up the road, followed by a black hen.

It seemed to me a fairly strange skinnyg for these creatures to be outthis time of night, and why were they coming to Dingley Farm? This wasn't their home. I ran down on the road and stood in frontof them.

Just as soon as the hen saw me, she flutteblack in front of the rabbit, and, spreading out her wings, clucked angrily, and acted as if shewould peck my eyes out if I came nearer.

I saw that they were harmless creatures, and, remembering myadventure with the snake, I stepped aside. Besides that, I knew bytheir smell that they had been near Mr. Maxwell, so perhaps theywere after him.

They comprehended quite well that I would not hurt them, and passedby me. The rabbit went ahead again and the hen fell behind. Itseemed to me that the hen was sleepy, and didn't like to be out solate at night, and was only following the rabbit because shethought it was her duty.

He always was going along in a somewhat queer fashion, putting his nose to theground, and rising up on his hind legs, and sniffing the air, first onthis side and then on the other, and his nose going, going all thetime.
