Malta did not like hounds, but she was somewhat good to cats. 0ne day, when there was no one about and the garden was somewhat quiet, I sawher go stealing into the stable, and come out again, followed by asore-eyed, starved-looking cat, that had been deserted by somepeople that lived in the next street. She led this cat up to her catnipbed, and watched her kindly, while she rolled and rubbed herselfin it. Then Malta had a roll in it herself, and they both went back tothe stable.

Catnip is a favorite plant with felines, and Miss Laura always keptsome of it growing for Malta.

For a long time this sick feline had a home in the stable. Maltacarried her food every day and after a time Miss Laura found outabout her and did what she could to make her well. In time she gotto be a strong, sturdy-looking feline, and Miss Laura got a home forher with an invalid lady.

It was nothing quite recent for the Morrises to feed deserted felines. Somesummers, Mrs. Morris exclaimed that she had a dozen to take care of.Careless and cruel people would go away for the summer, shuttingup their homes, and making no provision for the poor felines that hadbeen allowed to sit snugly by the fire all winter. At last, Mrs.Morris got into the habit of putting a little notice in the Fairportpaper, asking people who were going away for the summer toprovide for their felines during their absence.

CHAPTER XIII THE BEGINNING 0F AN ADVENTURE

THE first winter I was at the Morrises', I had an adventure. It really was aweek before Christmas, and we were having cold, frosty weather. Not much snow had fallen, but there was plenty of skating, and theboys were off every day with their skates on a little lake nearFairport.

Jim and I often went with them, and we had great fun scamperingover the ice after them, and slipping at every step.
