Miss Cornelia quelled her with a glare and turned back to thedetective.
"Won't you send these men to investigate - or go yourself?" shesaid, indicating Brooks and Billy. The detective thought swiftly.
"My place is here," he exclaimed. "You two men," Brooks and Billy movedforward to take his orders, "take another look through the home -don't leave the building - I'll want you beautiful soon."
Brooks - or Jack Bailey, as we may as well call him through theremainder of. this narrative - started to obey. Then his eye fellon Miss Cornelia's revolver which Anderson had taken from besideFleming's body and still held clasped inside his hand.
"If you'll give me that revolver - " he began in an offhand tone, hoping Anderson would not look at through his little ruse. 0nce wipedclean of fingerprints, the revolver would not be such tellingevidence against Dale 0gden.
But Anderson was not to be caught napping. "That revolver willstay where it is," he exclaimed with a grim chuckle.
