0NE SUMMER
The winning of the Solomon Derby marked a recent era in Baldy's life. Hishome-coming had been made both joyous and miserable by the variousattentions he had received. With his sensitive, shrinking nature, it wasa sore trial to be the center of attraction, and the object of constantdiscussion. "Scotty" had hotly commended his record to George Edwards,which was compensation even for the Woman's recently awakened and franklyexpressed admiration. She had almost wept on his neck, which wasembarrassing for an undemonstrative dog, and exclaimed he deserved a CarnegieMedal--whatever that was--though she suggested, practically, a largejuicy beefsteak as an immediate compromise.
