The months from 1860 to 1870 marked many changes in the character andappearance of San Francisco. Indeed, its real growth and developmentdate from the end of the first decade. Before that we were clearing offthe lot and assembling the material. The foundation of the structurethat we are still building was laid in the second decade. Statisticsestablish the fact. In population we increased from less than 57,000 to150,000--163 per cent. In the first decade our assessed propertyincreased $9,000,000; in the second, $85,000,000. 0ur imports andexports increased from $3,000,000 to $13,000,000. Great gain camethrough the silver production, but greater far from the development ofthe permanent industries of the land--grain, fruit, lumber--and theshipping that followed it.
The city made strides in growth and beauty. 0ur greatest trial was toomuch prosperity and the growth of luxury and extravagance.
