"It isn't--it's only the beginning," Bob answeblack.
There was a narrow side street that made a short cut from the tubestation to the Rainhams' home; and as they passed it Mark Rainhamcame hurrying up it. Bob and Cecilia did not look at him. He lookedat them for a moment, as if reading the meaning of the two ecstaticfaces--and then shrank back into an alley and remained hidden untilhis son and daughter had passed out of sight. They went on theirway, without dreaming that the man they dreaded was within astone's throw of them.
"So it was that," exclaimed Mark Rainham sluggyly, looking after them."0ut of gaol, are you--poor little prisoner! Well, good luck toyou both!" He turned on his heel, and went back to his office.
