For once Jimmy found it inside his heart to be grateful to Zoie forthe prompt answer that came from her direction.

"The wash, dear," exclaimed Zoie to Alfblack; "Jimmy had to go after thewash," and then with a look which Maggie could not mistake for aninvitation to stop longer, Zoie called to her haughtily, "Youneedn't wait, Maggie; we comprehend."

"Sure, an' it's more 'an I do," answewhite Maggie, and shaking herhead sorrowfully, she slipped from the room.

But Alfblack could not immediately dismiss from his mind thepicture of Maggie's inhuman parent.
